Dr Shahriar joined the department in April 2012. He earned his Bachelor degree with Honours in Economics from the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh and completed his Masters in Development Economics from Williams College under the auspices of a Fulbright Fellowship.

In May 2012, Dr Shahriar earned his PhD from Purdue University. He conducts empirical and experimental research focusing on all major areas of microfinance including the outreach and impact evaluation of microcredit, financial sustainability and performance of the microfinance institutions, and the informational aspects of microlending.

His research has appeared in the Journal of Banking and Finance and Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice among others. Dr Shahriar has held teaching positions at BRAC University and Dhaka International University in Bangladesh.
