Asadul Islam is a Professor in the Department of Economics. As a development economist, his research focuses on education, social networks, microfinance, petty corruption, and risk-sharing mechanisms of households. He also works on the economics of international migration. Asadul is involved extensive field works including running experiments and conducting randomised controlled trials. His research has been funded by UK ESRC, ARC, AusAID (DFAT) and IGC.
Asadul is the coordinator of the South-Asia Research Network (SARN), a multidisciplinary network that brings together researchers and scholars, including PhD students, from universities and other research institutions, working on economic issues in South Asia. He is the the founder of an independent research organisation in Bangladesh, the Initiative for Development Research and Implementation (IDRI), which employs local researchers and field workers to help academics around the world to conduct surveys and experiments.
